The Pregnant Spine
A woman's body endures tremendous changes during pregnancy. Expectant mothers produce high levels of the hormone known as relaxin, which enables ligaments to become flexible and lax. Relaxin allows the joints to have an increase and motility and enables the pelvis to widen in anticipation of labor. The increase in body weight, breast and uterine size, and hormonal fluxuaction, will collectively effect the spine by exaggerating the normal curvatures. The combination of these changes may exacerbate any weaknesses and lead to back or pelvis pain, sciatica, mobility difficulties, or even urinary incontinence. Ideally, an expectant mother should recieve regular chiropractic care throughout her pregnancy. The chiropractic adjustments will help prevent and treat the common pains of pregnancy, by restoring proper biomechanics of the muscles and joints.

As the uterus enlarges to accomodate the growing baby, it will expand upward from the pelvis. The supporting ligaments that attach the uterus to the pelvis will also stretch during the growing process.

If there is a misalignment in the expectant mother's pelvis, these ligaments may become restrictive and tight, and ultimately will affect the positioning of the uterus. Overall this may create intrauterine constraint, limiting the space for your developing baby to move freely. Your baby's movements aid in neurological development and ample space is essential. Your baby's position while in utero is also very important, especially during contractions.

Webster Technique
Dr. Sarah Romanovich has advanced training in prenatal chiropractic care and is certified in Webster Technique. Webster technique is an evaluation of the sacrum and it’s surrounding soft tissues. Objectives of the Webster technique are to correct sacral subluxations, release any muscular or ligamentous tension, and to eliminate nerve interference to the pelvis.
As a Webster certified chiropractor, Dr. Sarah has been able to help many expectant mothers avoid c-sections due to breech presentations.
